Guaifenesin Protocol for Fibromyalgia

Guaifenesin Protocol for Fibromyalgia
by Paul St. Amand, M.D.

The Protocol consists of:

1. Reading his book (to know the correct dosage for you, to know what specifically to avoid,
and to know what will happen).
2. Taking Guaifenesin
3. Avoiding salicylates
4. Low Carb Diet

In his book, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia: The Revolutionary Treatment That Can Reverse the Disease" Paul St. Amand, M.D. writes about how he discovered that the drug guaifenesin can actually give patients the possibility of reversing fibromyalgia. However, for guaifenesin to work, one must eliminate all sources of salicylates (a chemical compound that blocks the effectiveness of guaifenesin.) Salicylates can be found in many common things that people use. He calls his method of reversing fibromyalgia, "the guaifenesin protocol."

Dr. St. Amand also speaks about how the initial stages of taking guaifenesin are the most horrible as the body cleanses itself (the sufferer will begin to question whether the drug is actually working). However, it is the later stages of taking guaifenisin whereby Dr. St. Amand states that the person's fibromyalgia begins to dissipate.

Tell us your experiences with the Guaifenisin Protocal as a Fibromyalgia treatment. Rate the treatment below.

This is a difficult treatment to undergo. One, theres not alot of doctors who participate, so you pretty much gotta do it on your own, And two, your symptoms must get worse before they improve and for most people this would be a problem; however if you're as sick and debilitated as myself than you don't work or have anything to lose.In the long run this is working.I have been on for one year and I can't express how happy I am that I stuck it out

I started taking guai on Jan. 4 2009, at the time i could barely walk, and had all of the common fibro symptoms. I went thru alot of pain and hard work on my part. as of Oct. i returned to work after 2 years off. as of Dec.18 i started to play hockey again. I still have along way to go, but i am an exception. Every one progresses at their own pace. I probably would have been in a wheel chair today if had not been for the local Guai Group's help. Be tough and keep going...   11/30/09
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
I've seen comments of people who complain of no improvement after a week or a month...you have to keep going. Pull up your boot straps and keep marching on, it takes time but the improvements come. My first was dreaming again, then my hair stopped falling out, the dry skin on my face cleared, my IBS became almost non-existant, I started SLEEPING AT NIGHT, etc. I would love for my pain/fatigue to be suddenly gone but they are going to take longer. And yes, there was more pain at first but it calmed down some later and I have now had one day that my pain was reduced enough to finally see the difference in the pain and the fatigue. Until that day, I thought the pain caused my weakness/fatigue. I'm in a cycle that is causing pain right now that is over two weeks long but I know that eventually I will have a good day and that along with that good day there will be some kind of improvement. The pain and fatigue I'm learning are not some of the quicker and more consistent improvements but given time they will come I'm sure because I've had enough improvement and just enough "good" days to prove to me that I'm on the right track.

This protocol is worthless   08/18/08

When a protocol has to have a hot line to advise you on all the things that you have to avoid it is truly a joke. You can't even walk barefoot in the grass. I used this total waist of time for 9 month's. One thing that you should know is that this protocol states that you have to get sicker before you get better and it sure as hell did that.If you really have myofascial pain go to the Blatman Pain clinic in Cincinnati Ohio.Dr Blatman is America's leading authority on Simon's and Travail's trigger point therapy and IT DOES WORK.After two years of this protocol I have gone from a cripple to leaving a pain free productive life His phone number is (513)956-3200

nothing better   11/18/06
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
I did it all. All the herbs the acupuncture and chiropractor and alt med docs. The antidepressants and this was over a 15 year period. Pain began in my lower body and within 10 years it was all over. Feels like you have been bruised all over and you have the flu ALL the time. You are stiff ALL the time and you don't sleep. My last resort was taking ms contin and oxycontin, over 340mg per day. Didn't work, barely helped and I was at the end of my rope. I decided to check out Dr St Amand's guai web site and read the posts over and over for 2 months. One day I decided to try it and I followed all the directions. It was difficult in the beginning. Back then the book was not out yet, but the doctor put all the info on the web site. This doctor also has fibro. The first 5 months were awful,(though not much worse than I already was) He did say I would feel worse at first- and I did. BUT that was a GOOD thing because I was responding as he said I would. Maybe odd to say, but I would have been upset if I had not felt worse because that would have meant (to me) that it was not working. By the 6th month I noticed little things were not as bad. Maybe just for a day, but there was a small improvement. By the 9th month I knew I was having better days and I knew there was subtle improvement and the good days were more and more. By 9 months I felt 50% better than I had prior to taking guai and by 18 months I was 85-90% and that was 6 years ago. I would consider myself 95% well, I have a few days that if I over do it I might feel it. I have to continue taking guai, and take care of myself. But this protocol has given me my life back. I would recommend it to anyone, HOWEVER, you must follow it as stated. It is not difficult, the web site has all instructions and as far as blocker (salicylates) all are listed on the site. All products and blockers are listed on the site. All products you can use are listed on the site and if you have a question, there are many people to help you. There are a lot of myths floating around about the guai protocol; please read it for yourself. (or buy the book) You can use make up and tooth paste, but not one's with (herbal products) There are many you can use and all are listed on the site. Herbs contain salicylates and sals will block the guai. If you are HG, all diet advise is there for you. Dr StAmand monitors the list and answers questions too. There is a complete support board. There is no reason not to do it, but you must do it right if you want to succeed. There are thousands of people posting on the boards and many of them from all over the world. I was amazed to see people posting from so far away, but fibro is world wide problem.
