Extremely helpful for me 05/08/09
Reviewed by:
Location Not Given
In addition to Fibromyalgia, I have Systemic Lupus Erythemetous (with positive lupus anticoagulant), Degenerative Disc Disease, Failed double-disc back surgery, Hypothyroidism, and Hypertension(OY!) So, I generally feel like complete crap all the time. And after 15+yrs, I'll tell ya, it gets no better with age. However, during those 15 yrs, I held a full time medical office job, sang in a blues band on weekends, and took complete care of my husband, my dog, and my home. I'm pretty proud of that. I have been on Provigil for over 10+ years...I take 2-4 tablets a day. I never had one side effect. I've been prescribed, and tried several antidepressants in the past, but they just made me fat and unhappy. Provigil actually gives me MOTIVATION. Recently, I unfortunately had the opportunity to do my own case study. Six wks ago, my insurance company decided my 10+yr-old script for Provigil suddenly needed a "PRIOR AUTHORIZATION" from my doctor's office, in order for them to cover it (most likely because, as with every other good drug, people started using it as a "recreational" drug, thus ruining it for the legitimate cases). So,I thought, "Whatever, I can live without it for a while". BOY, WAS I WRONG!! Not due to withdrawals, or anything of the sort, because it's not that kind of drug. But for the 6 wks it took for my authorization to go through, I literally did not want to get off the damned couch. I couldn't. Now, the reason most doctors want to prescribe antidepressants for Fibromyalgia, is because when you don't FEEL like doing anything, they assume it's a mental thing. And, yeah, you can start to feel worthless and hopeless...so, you MUST be depressed. They don't understand how someone could just feel too icky and too tired. I would lie on my couch all day, and and with all the ambition in the world, I'd write a long list of things to HOPEFULLY accomplish the following day. Of course, I couldn't do any of it. But it wasn't that I didn't NEED or WANT to do these things...in fact, I always thought I might be able to do it. So I was wasting away...sinking deeper and deeper into my "funk". But, It's not DEPRESSION...I don't feel depressed...I'm too tired to feel anything...I don't want to KILL MYSELF for Christ's sake...I just don't want to do ANYTHING...I'm just too tired. Personally, I think that feeling could be almost WORSE than depression. Mostly because you're so angry at yourself. You're angry that you used to be able to do everything your friends could do...angry because YOU KNOW that the best thing for you is to KEEP MOVING...get out...take a walk...call a friend or family member to catch up...But you can't...you just can't. And you don't WANT to be this way...you just are. Now, how on Earth are you supposed to explain that to anybody else? Anyway...I may seem worked up a bit...but it's just because I finally got my Provigil script back this afternoon...AND, after 6+wks of basic inactivity, I ALSO just got back from walking my dog for 5+ blocks, with my sister-in-law...because I happened to run into her on my way home from visiting my sister, and told her I'd actually like to walk with her! Now...I do take pain medication on a regular basis for my many ailments. However, while on Provigil, I find I need half as much. Granted, while you're sitting on the couch, doing nothing, you've got nothing else to do but think about your pain. My point is, for me personally, without Provigil (over the last 6 wks) I was completely sedentary, severely unmotivated, and yes, started to think I was becoming depressed. However, finally on Provigil again...I can GET OFF THE COUCH...actually motivate myself to take any invitation to have lunch or take a simple walk...or even just to do the damned dishes. I don't feel the need to nap every 1/2 hour. THIS makes me feel better. Sure...I still have pain...but at least now, I have the motivation and energy to try to DO something about it, or just forget it for a little while. And THAT makes me FEEL BETTER. You know, after 15+yrs of this stuff...I've come to the conclusion that it's not the "hopelessness" feeling of depression, that so many doctors are so robotically trained to diagnose and treat you for...It's the USELESSNESS that's the REAL problem. And from experience, the 5-6 different antidepressants that have been forced on me, with all their side effects, have never helped the uselessness. It BECOMES an emotional thing because you PHYSICALLY aren't able to do the things you need to do...because you're just too damned tired. Yeah, if you squitch on my "trigger points", they still hurt. Yes, after I do a bunch of stuff, I'm a bit tired. But at least I actually DID a bunch of stuff. I'm not a chemist...I don't know exactly how Provigil works. It is not "Speed", and my BP was is under better control when I'm on it. I'm not gonna run any marathons...it's just not my nature. All I know is that without it, I was an uncharacteristically uncommunicative couch potato. And that's no way to live...no matter how "sick" you might be. Not exactly a long story, short, but there's my "Provigil testimonial". Try it...It might just help you too.

I have had headaches 7 days a week for so long I can't remember when they started and now they are subsiding...That in itself is a miracle...Love this medication!! Hope it lasts.

Works great for fatigue 05/08/08
Reviewed by:
Location Not Given
This medication works great for the fatigue of fibromyalgia. Only drawback is many insurance companies will not pay for it since it is only FDA approved for Narcolopsy. It is very expensive to purchase without insurance at $10 a pill. I am currently going to buy from an online UK pharmacy since they have a generic version which is not yet available in the US and the cost is about 1/3. Once you start taking it and see how well it works it is very depressing to be told that you can no longer get it. I get samples from my rheumatologist or neurologist sometimes, but it gets embarassing to ask every month! Good luck!

I miss my miracle Provigil 04/16/08
Reviewed by:
Ohio, USA
I could do a commercial for this drug!! I had been diagnosed initially with CFS and this was my cure. Initially it worked great for 30-45 days & then some of the muscle aches started to creep back in. My Dr. increased my dosage & I was back to my old self. Life was grand. Admitedly I was still a bit week but I had clarity of thought, energy and this drastically reduced my depression. The only side effects that were significant for me was it changed the way my body recognized hunger pangs so I would sometimes feel like I could go long periods w/o eating and the dry mouth. I had to have water constatnlty, but that was a minor inconvenience because the increased water helped me loose a few pounds & that helped boost my self esteem & outlook on life as well. I recently became unemployed & knew I had to start cutting back & rationing my remaining supply. I started cutting the pills in 1/2. w/o insurance my script was running abt $400 which of course I can't afford. Having had to stop taking it my smptoms are far worse than ever, I'm picking the weight back up, I have no energy to do much of anything and I find myself fighting/hiding the tears from the pain & depression daily. I'm looking into a few herbal remedies because that's all I can afford. The warm baths help, but I have a toddler & can't stop everything throughout the day to sit in the tub.

The Wonder Drug 05/03/07
Reviewed by:
Location Not Given
It is hard for me to rate some of the areas like ibs and skin problems because I did not associate improvements in those areas with the Provigil.
I've spent 10+ years with fibromyalgia and primary biliary cirrhosis. The fatigue and mental fog had literally robbed me of my life. I was on short-term disability looking at permanent disability only one year ago. I struggled to return to work, but didn't feel alert or very capable of handling my job. After receiving the Provigil prescription within three days time I felt my life returning. I still have pain and tender points and I still get tired, but I am able to cope with the fatigue. I can think clearly and concentrate better than I have for many of the last 10-15 years.
The only draw back is that my insurance doesn't pay for Provigil for fibromyalgia treatment. I hope that efforts of those of us who have been helped by it will eventually lead to coverage by more insurance companies.

Provigil gave me my life back! 02/09/07
Reviewed by:
Location Not Given
Provigil has allowed me to become a more "normal" person. I have trouble staying awake during the day and problems sleeping at night. FM takes away your ability to function and makes driving and decision making much harder. The Provigil has allowed me to stay awake during the day and able to do some things around the house and it has also allowed me to sleep better at night (with meds for that too). So basically Provigil has allowed me to function during the day.

Provigil is a GREAT asset to Fibromyalgia Patients 01/02/07
Reviewed by:
Location Not Given
Without Provigil I am a worthless being suffering from all the major Fibromyalgia(FM)symptoms. Provigil is such a great benefit to me because it increases my energy and sense of well being. The sense of well being comes from being able to get out of bed and perform daily functions with greater strength and stamina. I am currently being faced with the fact that my new insurance plan is refusing payment approval for Provigil since I do not have narcolepsy and it is not a medication covered by the plan. This horrific nightmare has forced me to begin rationing my remaining medication since I don't know when or if we will win the "dispute" with the insurance company. I use the word "we" since FM doesn't just effect me, it effects my entire family because when my symptoms are bad I cannot participate in normal family activities. My doctor has joined our battle against the insurance company by writing several letters providing substantial evidence to the positive effect and benefits I receive from my use of Provigil. My doctor quoted my 12 year old son in one of these letters, since my son had told him, "That medication (Provigil) makes the difference between my mom participating in my life or not". On the days when I do not take Provigil (since I am rationing it) I am unable to get out of bed or if I do it is only for less than 3 hours max! The added fatigue and loss of exercise contributes immensely to the amount of pain, fatigue, and other FM symptoms I suffer. Even though it is not a pain reliever, it still contributes to my ability to manage pain by affording me the opportunity to get up out of bed and move around and exercise a little. This alone helps the stiffness and muscle wasting that takes place from just lying around. My depression level is also greatly managed because I am actively participating in my own life instead of just lying around wasting away in a lump of pain. IBS is also greatly benefited indirectly by Provigil since physical activity definitely helps prevent irregularity. I have benefited greatly by Provigil, but fear the possibility of having to pay for the prescription out of my own pocket. FM is already costly enough without having to pay for "off plan" prescriptions. As far as I am concerned, even though it is an expensive medication, it is still worth its weight in gold! I highly recommend this medication for improving the fatigue and other associated symptoms of FM.

Beware of this Drug! 11/26/06
Reviewed by:
Columbia, South Carolina, USA
I took Provigil for about two years for fatigue, and at first I thought it was fantastic. It gave me lots of energy and kept me up and moving.
It took a good while for me to see the costs involved with taking this drug, however. While I was awake, over time I realized how incredibly foggy and unproductive I had become. I just couldn't get things done. It's kind of hard to explain, but, for example, I would sit down to pay bills and discover three hours later that I had done nothing but play solitaire on my computer. Time would just evaporate. I would be incredibly focused, but it would never be on the thing I needed to focus on. Also, I would try to plan out an activity or project, but I just couldn't put the steps together. Weeks and months would go by and I still wouldn't have projects completed. I am normally a very organized, pretty efficient person, so this was very upsetting and perplexing. It really did take about a year and a half before I was able to think through the Provigil "stupids," as I have heard them called, and determine there was something very wrong. I went off the drug last summer (be careful about this, too. You have to go off very slowly or you may lapse into complete, unable-to-get-out-of-the-bed depression, as I did for a few days before I called my doctor and she explained that I had to go off even more slowly than I was. I was halving the dose every two weeks, but that wasn't slowly enough. She said to halve it each month).
It took all summer, but I finally got off, and I FINALLY have my brain back. I am absolutely amazed at how much Provigil wrecked my thinking. It has taken about three months to clean out my home office and my classroom from all the random crappola I collected - papers, crazy purchases, things I picked up off the street even! I just had huge collections of empty boxes, broken furniture, INSANE items I could NEVER use. I am not normally a pack rat at all, so this was another significant change in my brain.
My family has also noticed a HUGE change in my ability to think clearly and get things done. I'm a teacher, and I have many of the same students for several years in my program. My kids, being the gentle, politically correct little darlings that they are, have probably shown me better than anyone how much things have changed. They refer to last year as "When Ms. Grant was on drugs" and are constantly pointing out how things are functioning so much better this year. They really do have a point, and Ms. Grant is very happy not to be "on drugs" anymore! I take Adderall when I feel I can't drag myself out of bed in the morning, and I'm able to function most days OK.
One other thing I noticed about Provigil is that it seemed to interfere with my ability to determine my need for sleep or rest. I tended to race around (while accomplishing nothing) until I literally dropped while on that drug. Then I would be in bed for several days. Now, I'm better at recognizing my body's symptoms and slowing down before crashing.
I don't want to tell everyone out there not to take Provigil, because I have no idea how many people react to it the way I do. Just remember that if you take it and soon find bills stacking up that you used to always pay on time, you find yourself in a store buying the same basic thing (in my case it was organizational baskets and containers) over and over again, and you suddenly just can't give up that useless old torn up box something was just mailed to you in, there just might be a problem!
I truly hope you have better luck with this drug than I did!

a life saver 10/25/06
Reviewed by:
Location Not Given
I was diagnosed with late stage lyme's disease and treated with antibiotic iv therapy for 2 months. my Doctors say I was left with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue syndrome.
And left with my left side of my face appearing to have bells palsy, but was not.
After 2 years of treatment I discovered I had to cut all my Docs rxc's in 1/2 in order to work and hold a full time job.My face returned to normal with Neurotin 100mg. a day, and zoloft 50mg, a daily vitamin, 30 minutes a day exercise, a long bath and the schduled 6 to 8 hours a sleep through the work week.
A big adjust! me------ Yes! For someone who NEVEDhad any type of schedule their whole life.
Sure, I had my ups and downs and fibro fog days and flares, but I felt so much better. Then one day I told my Doctor, whom I searched and searched for and found the very one for me (It took a while),That I could handle the pain just help me with the fatigue and that through a friend of mine I had heard about Provigil and if he thought it would help me through my day to help me feel like my old self again.
He actually admitted to not being very familiar with this drug and would have to let me know. His specialty is infectious diseases like lyme's, that's how I found him. You must find the right Doc. Don't give up-keep searching!
Within the week the nurse called and stated that She was calling it in to my pharmacy for 1 month 100mg a day.
I took it the first 3 days and was completely high on life and did things I hadn't been able to do in a couple of years.
I then backed off and knew I would crash and burn eventually. I called him and discussed the dosage and since I cut everything in half we decided that I would try 50mg. everyother day.
I AM SO FULL OF ENERGY AND ESTATIC about my results after 1 month. I had begun putting on a little wieght on all the medicine and being to do tired to do anything, but I have lost 4 pounds because I think I'm more active and able to be alive.
My co-workers have begin asking me what I'm doing and that I seem to be so much better, awake, with it!
And they have seen me go through it all. I have been there 7 years.
There are no jitters or anything like drinking a whole pot of coffee and running out of steam in an hour or before I'm even ready for work.
I know I sound like a commercial and cannot belive the difference in my life. And of couse the depression is better because I feel I can have a life other than work.
I wish I would have discovered it 3 years ago, but feel blessed that I have now. Better enjoy the good times when they arrive, and pray they stay. For now I will. I hope that someone reads this and this will help them to give them some stategy for there treatment. Give it a try! Good Luck!
I've been reading the others and willing to try them all! But once you've got your cocktail leave it alone and enjoy for a while.

Provigil for fatigue 07/18/06
Reviewed by:
Michigan, USA
I was prescribed Provigil due to the fatigue I had when a sleep latency nap test showed I had narcolepsy. Since then, my dx has been changed to FMS. I am still on the Provigil. It helps great for keeping me awake. I agree with another entry...it keeps you awake , but no added strength. I take 200mg in the am and 100mg at noon. I definately notice a difference if I do not take it.

Once a day, as needed for energy 10/26/05
Reviewed by:
Ormond Beach, Florida, USA
This drug truly does all it says - but it ONLY does all it says. It tells your brain that you are awake and that is wonderful. It gets me through the day and I AM NOT COMPLAINING. But it is important for everyone to know that energy does not equal strength. I am just as weak as I was, I am simply awake. I can get through the day, but that cup of coffee still weighs a ton in my hand. Just be careful and don't over do it. I also find that I only sleep about 4-5 hrs a night now. If I only take half a pill, I can't get through the day. Catch 22.
