Neurontin, Fibromyalgia, Insomnia, Hot Flashes   07/04/10
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
April 2000 I was Rx'd Neurontin (not generic) primarily for FMS pain - peripheral neuropathy, chronic myofascial pain. My initial dose was 100mg at bedtime and gradually increased to 800mg in AM and 1600mg at bedtime - total 2400mg/day. I currently take 1 400mg capsule in AM and 2 400mg capsules at bedtime - total 1200mg/day. The side effect of somnolence does not affect me from the daytime dose. I no longer have chronic insomnia from FMS because the bedtime dose makes me fall asleep within 5-10 minutes. Neurontin has helped with other symptoms such as burning pain, sensitive skin and IBS for me. An added bonus since I'm post menopausal was discovering that Neurontin was controlling my hot flashes - that studies had been done regarding this, and that my gyn/doc approved since I refused HRT/ERT. I will be discussing the possibility of reducing the dose to 1 300mg capsule in AM and 2 300mg capsule at bedtime. Bottom line for me is that for 10 years Neurontin has helped with a variety of fibromyalgia symptoms, stopped insomnia and stopped hot flashes. To get that much relief from one medication has been fantastic for me. Too bad it cannot help OA or Spinal Stenosis especially since I cannot take any pain meds, e.g. ultracet, ms contin, vicodin or the like due to severe adverse side effects, e.g. vomiting and dysphoric anxiety. Neurontin has helped me in so many ways. Had studies be done for this drug's effectiveness for fibromyalgia, the results would be the same/similar as for Lyrica and Neurontin would be an FDA "approved" drug for Fibromyalgia.

neurontin makes a big difference   09/27/08

While not an end all treatment, Neurontin, 500mg taken right before bedtime, makes a big difference in my deep bone/muscle pain. I am able to work (as a teacher) and live a full life. I also take several other medications for my fibro, but neurontin does make a BIG difference in the quality of my life.

Scary side effects, no reduction in pain   08/22/08
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
I was prescribed a steadily increasing dose of Neurontin, but by the time I began taking 400 mg at night and 100 in the morning, the side effects made it impossible for me to work or drive. In addition to a crushing headache, I experienced uncontrollable daytime drowsiness. While at work I fell asleep so suddenly I bit my tongue and lips as my head snapped forward and I also began dreaming before even really falling asleep -- so the dream images were almost like hallucinations. I was afraid to drive even short distances. Now I'm taking just 300 mg at night and the side effects have tapered off but there's been no improvement in the pain it was prescribed to relieve.

Been on this, Gabapentin, for several months now and did work great at first, but I'm still not convinced the dose is right yet. I also take 75mcg/hr of Durogesic DTrans fentanyl patches. I'm gonna try it for a little longer as I haven't wieghed up whether or not Pregabalin will be of more benefit to me.

Works Well with the Patch   06/28/07
Reviewed by:     Pennsylvania, USA
I had to give this medication some time before it worked properly, so 'hang in there' if you thinks it's not working for you. I'm now taking 2400mg a day and when I tried to scale back on some of my meds, I found that I missed this medication. According to my doctor, Neurontin works along with the patch (Duragesic) so trying to cut back on this medication only took away from how the patch was working, too. Take this for several months before giving up on it. You'll either LOVE it or HATE it. There doesn't seem to be a happy medium here.
