I am a 33yr old female with severe lupus and severe fibro. Discovered the benefits of MJ by accident while on chemo for my lupus nephritis. I have lived with the sometimes unbearable pain for what seems like forever. I have stopped smoking for a week now worried I have become to dependent.I am in tears writing this because the pain is terrible. I want to smoke so bad. I work in the medical field,part-time now, so I would lose my job if I had a piss test right now.I only smoke at night to help with the end of the day muscle pain and fatigue from being on my feet for 8+ hours a day. I would never put my patients at risk!!I am afraid that my teenage son will find out. I don't know what to do. I do know that MJ is the ONLY thing that has helped me. I am pain free, happy and able to be close to my "old" self. I wish it were not so taboo!!

No Comparison. Marijuana IS the BEST Treatment   09/28/09
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
I am a 38 year old, housewife, mother of 3 and grandmother of 1. I have severe Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain Syndrome. I have had 2 different doctors tell me that I have the worst case they have ever seen. I wasn't diagnosed until 2000, but I have had it since I was a teenager, just not as severe as it is today. I have tried several different pain medications, nothing helps the pain. A friend of mine kept telling me I needed to smoke marijuana, it would help me relax. I always chewed him out cuz I felt he was trying to negatively influence me. Until, I did some research on it. It was after I researched it and tried it, when I realized there is NOTHING that helps with the pain and other frustrating symptoms that accompany these 2 dredged disorders, like mj does. I can focus better now, you don't realized how pain affects your concentration and memory, your whole attitude, but it DOES! My IBS resolves itself when I smoke. I have more energy when I smoke. And it is the ONLY thing that actually takes away the pain. If you haven't tried it for pain, I strongly suggest you to try it. Just keep in mind that there are two different kinds, Sativa and Indica. If you don't like the first strain you try, keep trying until you find one that is best for you. Different strains help different medical conditions, so do your research. Only problem is, that I live in a state that it is still illegal for medical marijuana. Marijuana IS THE BEST thing for Fibromyalgia. Hands down. Nothing helps more with the pain or other symptoms like it does.

A shame   09/24/09

A true shame that this is illigal in so many areas. Fortunatly I live in Oregon and I am legal and an OMMP patient. It has helped me so much with managing pain and allowing me to sleep. Unfortunatly there is still such a stigma attached to it and even when you are legally prescribed this medicine you still take a chance on losing your job or even children. I was SO sick on Cymbalta, Lyrica and opiates that I was out of my mind and unable to think and focus most days. I even lost my job because of the side effects of the medications. This has absolutly no side effects and I am able to wake up not feeling drugged like I do with sleeping aids.

Would use it regularly if it were legal   09/15/09
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
I have been taking 300-400 mg Lyrica for about 1 year for pretty significant fibrosymptoms. I have less pain with Lyrica which helps me sleep better (but still need ambien) and sit longer (so I can work). But often I am quite drugged feeling in the morning so I need quite a bit of caffiene to get the brain in gear .. usually resulting in a crash much earlier than my work day end. I took about 6 weeks earlier this year to try small amounts of MJ (1-3 puffs). As with Lyrica it does allow me to excercise more, but because I can focus and know how to exercise without stressing the wrong areas. Lyrica blunts all the pain and so I tend overuse muscles and joints and then miss workouts until they heal. But on Lyrica I have gained 12-15 lbs and can't shake it - I lost 9 lbs during the 6 weeks on MJ. If MJ were perfectly legal (medically or otherwise) I would mostly drop the Lyrica because MJ has all the positives that Lyrica has without the scary long term use question. Also, it's quite a bit less expensive and I'd feel safe to have a drink or take an aspirin without pushing my liver to an unsafe state. Some of the negatives with MJ are that I can only take it after work or at least won't be driving. It energizes me to do things other than sit and rest. As far as sitting at a computer to work - well, while I have managed it for short periods, MJ really isn't good for complex design analysis or rational discussions about technical tasks. It is good when you need a little relaxed, creative thinking. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of need for that in my job. My best plan would be to use MJ during non-work hours and only on the worst symptom days would I take the Lyrica.

Natural Still Works Best   09/10/09
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
I had begun taking one or two puffs at night before bed approximately one year ago as my partner is a medical marijuana patient. I don't "do" drugs, don't drink alcohol, and wasn't interested in getting high. But I also have a seizure disorder which ruled out trying the current pharmaceuticals on the market for Fibromyalgia. I researched the efficacy of marijuana on Fibro, mostly European studies, and it looked hopeful. The marijuana does help me sleep and minimizes the pain/pressure points/IBS symptoms, but only at night. I am considering some other means of ingesting the marijuana as I don't want to smoke it either. My Dr has prescribed Ambien (5 mg) but even that makes me feel drugged the next day. If there is anything I could take that would allow me to function during the day I would be thrilled. I am down to a four day work week, and even that is too much most weeks. The cognitive "fog" from the poor sleep is jeopardizing my job I fear. I went out on disability two years ago, was denied permanent disability, and had to find work. I was without insurance for the last year before finding work. I am grateful for my job, but am not doing the best FOR it in my current state.

THE ONLY HEALTHY TREATMENT   07/23/09
Reviewed by:     Melbourne, Australia
I am an Aussie woman who has suffered with fibro all my adult life though not diagnosed until 5 years ago. I discovered the pain and nausea relief of pot by accident when smoking socially as a teenager. All chemically manufactured drugs do much damage in many ways and tend to be less effective. There are just two down sides - there is difficulty in sourcing 'outdoor' or 'bush' weed which is less potent and more healthy yet just as effective. Also, when my fibro is at its worst and I need to smoke pot, I am still unable to go to work even though I would be perfectly capable of performing well because I believe it is highly unprofessional to do business stoned and customer service is pretty well out of the question. The only side effect of hunger is not always present and not an issue for those of us who are not overweight.

FM, CFS & Chronic Pain    06/23/09
Reviewed by:     Deep Deep South, United States
I have suffered from FM for more than 25 years, first onset being after an accident in which I was hit by a 3/4 ton truck while I was on horseback. The fractures healed; the pain did not end. About 5 years after the accident, I was finally told by my physician that my pain was "all in my head." I tried a range of antidepressants, etc. with no relief. Finally, after 14 years of suffering, I was diagnosed as having FM & chronic pain & chronic fatigue syndrome by a lady rheumatologist. You can imagine my relief at not being "crazy." For some strange reason, my pain does not respond to opiates (Demerol, morphine, hydrocodone, Oxycodone, Percocet, etc.). Rather, these medications tend to intensify my distress by causing headache & constipation. I discovered this after many visits to a chronic pain physician who wanted to install a morphine pump in my abdomen which would have to be refilled on a weekly basis & which I would be dependent upon for the rest of my life (at that time, I was age 36). My elderly grandmother (Creek indian) suggested I try MJ in a tincture as an anti-inflammatory rather than the drugs I was prescribed. IT WORKED! I had been dependent upon 16 different prescriptions each month, costing me over $550 per month (back in the 1990s), yet I still had the pain. I used Gran's tincture (MJ macerated with 151 rum in a Mason jar), 2 tablespoons whenever needed, and my symptoms began to ease. I began inhaling the indica variety via vaporizer & found relief of migraine headaches & nausea & vomiting caused by the other Rx pills. Finally, I ditched the pills entirely & began using only MJ & Prozac 40 mg per day. In winter, I would use a mild muscle relaxant like Flexeril. I am proud to say MJ has changed my life & allowed me to be more active. Today, I live on a small homestead where we tend stock & our gardens & fruit trees, supplying 100% of our dairy & eggs, and 90% of our vegetables, all grown on our property. I have learned that fresh (not pasteurized or canned) goats' milk contains a short-chain fatty acid which retards the progression of FM. I still have my daily aches & pains, but life is so much more enjoyable now that I have made MJ my medicine. Before, I was always knocked out on morphine & unable to be an effective parent to my son. Now, I spin, weave, garden, & make wines & goats' milk soap to sell at craft fairs to supplement my disability income. I can truly say that MJ has saved my life.

MJ should be legalized   11/20/08
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
I have lived with Fibro since I was about 13 years old. For many years i was told that i had depression or i was looking for attention and even now i am told that i am a hypochondriac. Well let me tell you that about 7 months ago i relocated to another state, so i did not have connection to get mj and when i moved here i was not taking any medications. Now i am taking medications for high blood pressure (which was normal before i moved), muscle relaxers, vicodin (which i am now allergic to) lasix for fluid retention and i believe it is all due to the fact that i stopped smoking mj. So this is my theory...MJ for fibro has helped me while i was smoking it i had no problem getting up going to work, i could exercise-walk with less discomfort, I had my weight down to 170 pounds. 7 months after moving and the only positive thing i know is that i am back on MJ weening myself off of the other medications and starting to feel like myself again. The only drawback is that my employer tests for drug use and i am on pins and needles over this. My doctor does not know and i am presently trying to figure out how to get her to prescribe it for me. Any suggestions?

I can get a small about of Marjuana and still have it months later. I use a one hitter and couple hits and I am fine relaxed and no so much pain. Yeah, they are trying to legalize it here in my state for medical purposes, I will be the first to ask for a perscription when they do. If you are reading this thinking bullcrap.. or don't believe it... helps.. believe me it does.. far better than all the drugs I have been on. Thanks

Marijuana helped me, it could help you too   09/08/08
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
I am the youngest sufferer of Fibromialgia that I know. My mother's side of the family have almost all been diagnosed with this disorder but at a much older age then I. I am just 20 years old and the doctors believe I have suffered with this most of my life. As a child doctors told my mother that she was trying to get attention from me being ill. As an adult I was called a hypochondriact (sp) and depressed, which I was very much so being a teenager in highschool and experiencing so much pain that I eventually began to believe it was just a part of life that everyone went through and I was being a baby about it. I began experimenting with marijuana as a teenager, I suffered excrutiating migrains, severe pain all over body, painful periods that often times led to hostpitol visits and uncontrollable vomiting. Marijuana stopped my vomiting within 15-30 minutes, the abdominal pain stopped and I was able to sleep at night as well. I was extremly underweight being 90 lbs soaking wet part because of the depression I was experiencing, the pain I was in and the endless cocktails of meds the doctors had prescribed to me. While smoking marijuana i would have a much healthier appetite. One thing I have also found that has worked in the last year was giving up red meat. My mother-in-law sent me a photo copy of some pages of a book she had about fibromialgia that said that red meat should be avoided. I have recently moved to a new area and just got married not too long ago. I married into the military which makes acquiring marijuana very risky not only for me but for my husband's career. My fibromialgia has since increased in what i like to call "flare ups" and the pain has intensified unbelievably. I believe that marijuana should be a legal aid in pain suppression not only for fibromialgia sufferers but for people suffering other types and levels of pain as well. I had littlen side affects which were in no comparison to the god aweful side affects of vicodin, percoset, codien, ketorolac, tramadol and other pain suppressents I've been prescribed. The "side affects" were nothing more then an increased appetite (which only aided me), and sleepiness at times and only if i smoked too much which i often did right before bed time. So as far as I'm concerned these are not really side affects at all if they too aided in my pain suppression.

Marijuana helps Fibromyalgia/CFIDS   08/19/08
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
Marijana is the best treatment as yet for my FM and CFIDS pain and fatigue. I have also been diagnosed with depression for which it has also helped alleviate. I have been on numerous "legal", prescribed medications, ie. Neurontin, Elavil, Prozac, Flexeril, Vicodin, Xanax, Klonopin, Cymbalta, Ibuprofen, Ambien and Ambien CR to name just a few. I lost my job 8 months ago, due to my fibromyalgia, CFIDS and the depression that went with it. My quality of life was zero. The only thing I was able to do was go to work, which I sometimes would have to leave early due to the pain I was experiencing. I was not able to take care of my family at all or even to do needed things like go grocery shopping. After being fired I was ready to throw in the towel and apply for social security disability as instructed by my physician. I am having trouble finding a lawyer in this state who will take the case, being told that many judges look at FM or CFIDS as not valid disorders. Now due to the lack of income, I am only taking the Vicodin, Ibuprofen and Xanax at this time, as they are the cheapest medications of which I was being prescribed. I have found that adding a couple hits of marijuana with the medications seems to not only tp compliment them, but I am fatigue-free and able to actually have a life again. Unfortunately I live in a state that it is still illegal. I think Federal laws need to be changed as well.

After having a very successful spinal cord stimulator surgery, it enabled me to get out of bed and have some sense of normalcy!!! Just when I was feeling GREAT, not taking any pain meds, about 8 months later I started having really bad symptoms of Fibro, the typical muscle tenderness, pain really!, and painful joint swelling. Knocked Down Again!! So I decided to try cannabis. Just starting out, my first week. Not doing much for the pain, but I'm sleeping great and my anxiety levels have dropped trmendously. I'll give it time and see how it goes. Haven't gotten down the dosages quite yet, but I'm sure I will in time. Have a peacefull, painfree day!! Okay?

MJ is my best friend. It helps me so much to keep my anxiety levels to a minimum, as well as helping greatly with the pain (unfortunatly its only temporary), and the ability to eat and reduces nausea. It can get pricey when times are hard but its totally worth the money, especially concidering the redic price of RX's. Comming from a young woman with severe FMS, MJ is where its at! I also take a Calcium, magnesium, zinc, and V-D complex, a super V-B complex, and 5-HTP at night. The medications dont work! Use MJ and those supliments and it will help you SO much!!!! Good luck to all with FMS! Your all in my heart! XO

Truth about Cannabis   05/13/08
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
I am reluctant to even write down anything because of the stigma attached to cannabis however in all honesty, I freely admit that I receive more relief overall from cannabis than anything else. Coupled with Oxycontin it at least makes life tolerable. It is such a shame that in a "free" society, this most effective treatment is still illegal and users are looked upon as criminals. That is truly disgraceful. I am 55 yrs old and until Fibromyalgia destroyed my life I was a very productive individual, respected in my field and a leader in my community. Having to hide my most effective treatment from doctors and family (not my wife, she is totally supportive) is nothing short of ridiculous. Sadly, I doubt there will be little change in this as the government's propaganda campaign has been so effective.

This needs to be legal in all states   09/26/07
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
Really the only downside to marijuana as a treatment option is that it is illegal in most states, although it had been legal prior to the 1930's. Big PHARMA must be on the side of those who seek to keep this an illegal substance, as it is safe (there have been no deaths attributed to cannibis anywhere, as opposed to deaths caused by the "legal" pharmaceuticals); and it is (or would be) inexpensive. It is a simple, herbal medicine. I smoke a small amount in the evening, and one of the effects is muscle relaxation which helps me get through various stretching/toning exercises which are very helpful. A little more and I sleep very well. I have been using it for almost 20 years, the length of time I've had fibromyalgia, and without the relief I've experienced I likely would have had to take a medical disability from my very high pressure professional job in a social service agency. Now that I am retired it as allowed me to pursue my second career as a rancher. Cannibis is a God given gift!

Temporary pain relief is sometimes just what you n   04/09/07

Pot clearly isn't the greatest way to manage fibromyalgia, but I have gone through long periods of time when no other medications were effectively treating the pain, and marijuana helped me to escape from the mind-numbing pain for a while. Not a habit to get into though. Repeated use causes depression symptons to worsen so I try not to smoke very often. It does help you sleep though and takes away some migraine headaches.

Best Treatment--No Kidding   02/24/07

I have a small amount and then relax for a few minutes. I then find myself getting housework done. It helps you to pace yourself resulting in decreased fatigue. I can do housework with a lot less pain and stiffness (much easier to move around)! Then I sleep well that night so that the next day I am not in pain from everything I got done the night before. I wake up to a clean house and not the pain from it! It is also nice to get a chance to laugh and giggle and forget about the pain for a while...coming from someone who lives in constant pain and in that respect it helps to keep depression away. Best treatment I have found so far.
